Aggregate Guidance

Mason Sand

Mason sand or masonry sand is a fine, soft sand with angular pieces. It’s typically used in masonry and finishing work because it compacts well and provides a smooth finish.

Good for the following
applications:

  • Masonry mortar mixes
  • Brick and block laying
  • Plaster and stucco work
  • Volleyball courts and playground areas
  • Paver joint sand (fine finish)
  • Top dressing for lawns (light applications)

Pool Sand

Pool sand provides excellent drainage, prevents erosion, and helps create a stable, level surface for walkways, patios, and pool surrounds.

Good for the following
applications:

  • Pool filter media
  • Large aquarium or pond filtration systems
  • Water treatment plant sand filters
  • Specialty industrial filtration setups

Class A Cement Concrete Sand PennDOT Approved

Concrete sand is a coarse, washed sand with angular grains, specifically graded and sized for mixing with cement to make concrete.

This sand is ideal for the
following applications:

  • Mixing concrete and mortar
  • Base layer for pavers (when coarse sand is required)
  • Utility trench bedding
  • Backfill around pipes needing drainage
  • Leveling layer under above-ground pools
  • Horse arenas and sand rings (in some specs)

Type B3 Septic Sand PennDOT Approved

Septic sand is a clean, coarse sand specifically graded to be used in septic system drain fields (leach fields). It promotes proper filtration and drainage of effluent from the septic tank into the soil.

Good for the following
applications:

  • Septic drain field installations
  • Sand mound septic systems
  • Filtering media for wastewater dispersion
  • Engineered drainage beds requiring clean, certified sand

3/8" Minus Bank Run Black Sand

Black sand can refer to several types of dark-colored sand, depending on the source and region. It’s most commonly composed of minerals like magnetite, basalt, or volcanic ash. Its unique color and texture make it useful in a variety of industrial, landscaping, and specialty applications.

Good for the following
applications:

  • Decorative landscaping (contrasting color accents)
  • Golf course bunker mixes (in certain designs)
  • Industrial casting or foundry work (depending on material)
  • Aquarium or terrarium substrate
  • Specialty masonry or artistic projects

1/2" Minus Bedding Stone

#8 or 1B stone material is usually 3/8" to 1/2" in size, clean, washed, and angular in shape, ideal for the following applications:

  • Drainage layers for landscaping and hardscaping

#8 Gravel Pea Gravel

#8 or 1B stone material is usually 3/8" to 1/2" in size, clean, washed, and angular in shape, ideal for the following applications:

2A Gravel Modified

2A Modified stone or simply modified stone is a compactable aggregate blend typically made from crushed stone, fines, and stone dust. It ranges in size from about 1.5 inches down to dust and is used for the following applications:

  • Shed pad foundations
  • Under retaining walls (base layer)
  • Compacted base under asphalt or concrete

#57 Gravel 2B

#57 or 2B stone material is clean, washed, crushed aggregate that ranges in size from about 3/4” to 1” and is known for the following applications:

  • Retaining wall backfill
  • Base layer for driveways or parking areas
  • Under decks, sheds, and patios
  • Septic system stone (in some systems)

2B Landscape Stone

2B Round refers to rounded river rock that is about 1/2" to 1" in diameter, making it good for the following applications:

  • French drains where a natural look is preferred
  • Under decks and porches
  • Border edging around walkways or driveways
  • Drainage swales
  • Around AC units or utility pads

3" Crushed Rock

1–3" Crushed Stone refers to angular, crushed rock ranging in size from 1 inch to 3 inches. Unlike rounded gravel, this material has sharp edges, making it ideal for stability and compaction in heavy-duty applications.

  • Heavy-duty drainage applications
  • Stabilizing muddy areas
  • Entrance pads for construction sites
  • Erosion control
  • Culvert outlet protection
  • Railroad and industrial base material
  • Under riprap or larger stone

1-3" Round Landscape Rock

1-3 Round refers to river rock that ranges in size from approximately 1 inch to 3 inches in diameter. It is naturally rounded and smooth, making it good for the following applications:
